Malnourishment is becoming so severe in war-torn Yemen that children and parents are laying side-by-side in hospital beds, “too sick to move”.

That’s according to Muhannad Hadi, the World Food Programme’s Regional Director for the Middle East, speaking at UN Headquarters about his latest visit to Yemen.

He described the scenes he had witnessed of starving children as the worst he had seen in his 25-year career with WFP.

Around 14 million are food-insecure after more than 18 months of protracted conflict between coalition-backed government forces and rebels, who are battling for control of the country.

May Yaacoub asked Mr Hadi to describe what he had seen on the ground.
