A petition on behalf of the world’s refugees handed over to the UN Secretary-General on Friday represents an important “expression of solidarity”.
That’s the view of Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner for Refugees.
The UNHCR chief said that the #WithRefugees petition, which has gathered more than 1.3 million signatures, was being presented at UN Headquarters in order to draw attention to their needs, ahead of next week’s gathering of world leaders in New York.
Accepting the petition, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said “we stand with refugees” and called for a rejection of “xenophobic rhetoric”.
Afterwards, Reem Abaza asked Mr Grandi what impact he hoped the petition would have.
