Conflict in South Sudan has caused a recent spike in the number of accidents involving mines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW), according to a UN programme that’s working to rid the country of these weapons.

The UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) says people fleeing fighting between government and opposition forces are probably less aware of the hazards posed by ERW which include grenades, bombs and mortars.

The current crisis in South Sudan began in December 2013. But mines planted during the two civil wars in what was formerly Sudan still remain in the ground.
