Russia is moving “from despair to hope” in its efforts to address HIV/AIDS, a senior UN official has said.

Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS, was recently in Moscow for the 5^th Eastern Europe and Central Asia AIDS Conference.

The meeting focused on the urgent measures the region must take to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030 in line with the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UNAIDS estimated that at the end of 2014, some 1.5 million people there were living with HIV; more than 70 per cent of them in the Russian Federation.
