Burundi’s people living in terror, warns UN human rights chief

Burundi’s people are living in terror because of continued human rights violations, a senior UN official told members of the Security Council Friday.

Hundreds of people have been killed with thousands detained while more than 250,000 are refugees in neighbouring countries since April’s political crisis erupted, the UN says.

This has created a major humanitarian crisis compounded by the recent suspension of aid by the country’s largest donor, the European Union.
