“Encouraging” signs out of Burundi this Tuesday following a meeting between the UN Secretary-General and the country’s leader.

Ban Ki-moon said he welcomes President Pierre Nkurunziza’s plans to hold talks with the opposition, release more than a thousand detainees and lift some media bans.

The measures are aimed at ending nearly a year of political unrest and violence in the Great Lakes nation.

Dianne Penn has more from Mr Ban’s press conference in the capital, Bujumbura.
