The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is offering to help Brazil and other countries in the Americas reduce the mosquito population as part of the battle against Zika.

The agency is advocating the use of the Sterile Insect Technique, or SIT, which uses radiation to sterilize male mosquitoes.

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Zika virus has been detected in 26 countries in the Americas and is possibly linked to serious birth defects.

Aldo Malavasi, the IAEA’s Deputy Director General and Head of its Nuclear Science Department, explained the technique to Steve Thachet.
