Nearly 1,200 indigenous women and girls have been murdered or gone missing in Canada over the past 30 years, that’s according to UN and other international human rights experts.

They are urging the Canadian authorities to address the root causes of violence and discrimination against these people.

Leilani Farha, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing, was among the group of UN and other experts that met with senior Canadian officials tasked with setting up a national inquiry into these incidents.

She talks to Dianne Penn about the “dire” situation of indigenous women and girls in Canada, and what next steps must be taken.
