Ongoing violations in Iraq lead to erosion of national identity

Ongoing violations and abuses in Iraq have led to a breakdown in trust between ethnic groups and an erosion of the national identity.
That’s according to Eliana Nabaa, a spokesperson for the UN mission in Iraq, UNAMI.
UNAMI chief Ján Kubiš visited the Lalish Temple in Sheikhan, the Holy Shrine of the country’s displaced Yazidi community, to express solidarity with the minority group.
An ISIL invasion of Yazidi towns in northern Iraq last year forced tens of thousands of Yazidi people from their homes.
Siobhán Garside spoke to Ms Nabaa about the envoy’s visit and UNAMI’s mandate in the country.
