Four years after South Sudan declared independence, the country remains beset by conflict and displacement on an huge scale, UN humanitarian experts said Tuesday.

UN refugee agency UNHCR said that more than 2.25 million people have now been displaced by civil war, with tens of thousands of civilians fleeing into the bush and swampland in recent weeks.

Amid a reported increase in human rights violations ahead of the country’s fourth anniversary on Thursday 9 July, UNHCR’s Adrian Edwards told Daniel Johnson that the outlook for civilians is bleak.
