The root causes of the conflict in South Sudan that has led to the deaths and displacements of thousands of people need to be identified and addressed in order to have lasting peace.

That’s what has been said by the head of UN peacekeeping operations, Herve Ladsous, who has concluded a two day visit to the new country.

Mr. Ladsous said the department of peacekeeping operations is working to deploy extra troops to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

In December the Security Council approved an increase in the strength of UNMISS from 7,000 to more than 13,000 military and police personnel.

Nelson Lwak spoke with Mr Ladsous.
