The people of Yemen are being encouraged to be more self-sufficient to get through what has been described as a “deteriorating humanitarian crisis”.

High food and fuel prices, rising poverty, a breakdown of social services, diminishing resources as well as internal conflict and political instability have all fed into the crisis.

Now around ten million people, around 50 per cent of the population are receiving humanitarian assistance from the United Nations.

The World Food Programme is leading food distributions but is working towards a future in which Yemenis can feed themselves.
