World Diabetes Day: Know the warning signs, get the care you need

Three hundred and forty-seven million people worldwide have diabetes and the World Health Organization (WHO) projects that it will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces, resulting in increased blood sugar.

On World Diabetes Day, observed on 14 November each year, people are being encouraged to minimize the risks by adopting a healthy lifestyle and early testing.

Alberto Barcelo, Advisor non communicable diseases at the Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, spoke to UN Radio’s Jocelyne Sambira about the importance of learning about diabetes.
