The good life leads to rising diabetes rates in Qatar

14 November 2012

Diabetes rates are escalating across the globe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) which observes World Diabetes Day on 14 November each year.

Diabetes occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces, resulting in increased glucose in the blood.

The illness is also linked to inactivity and obesity.

These conditions are behind rising diabetes rates in the Gulf state of Qatar, where the traditional diet is being replaced by fast food meals.
