Mozambique has been commended for sustaining 20 years of peace.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon congratulated the country on the accomplishment, which commemorates the signing of a peace accord after years of civil war following independence from Portugal in 1975.

The government and the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), which was supported by the apartheid regime in South Africa, signed the agreement in Rome on 4 October 1992.
