Ban commends independent mediation centre for efforts in conflict resolution

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today commended the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, an independent mediation organization, for its works in helping resolve armed conflicts peacefully, and called for the continuation of the centre’s strong partnership with the United Nations.

“Your work has led to peace and saved countless lives – starting with your first project, between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement,” said Mr. Ban when he visited the centre.

He also welcomed the centre’s efforts in support of Arab countries striving to transition to democracy. “You understand that and you are working to help countries find a new, inclusive path to stability.”

Mr. Ban noted that preventive diplomacy was one of his main priorities as Secretary-General, and that he recognized the role of independent mediators in helping achieve desired results.
