Two senior United Nations officials today expressed deep sadness over the deaths of five people, including two contractors for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and three Iraqi officials, who were killed in a bus accident in Jordan yesterday.

The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq Christine McNab and Helen Clark, the UNDP Administrator, extended condolences on behalf of the UN to the relatives of those who died and the Government of Iraq.

A number of other passengers were injured in the accident, which occurred en route to the Dead Sea, and are receiving medical treatment in Jordan. Ms. McNab and Ms. Clark thanked the Jordanian authorities for their prompt action in delivering medical assistance to the injured.

Those involved in the accident were among dozens of people participating in a UNDP training on democratic governance.
