The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) in Darfur and the League of Arab States have agreed to continue coordinating their projects to provide services to inhabitants of the region to promote peace and stability and facilitate the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their villages.

The decision was made yesterday in Cairo, where Ibrahim Gambari, UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative and the mission’s head met with League of Arab States (LAS) Secretary-General Amr Moussa.

Both parties also discussed the latest developments in Darfur, including the recent signing of the two framework agreements between the Sudanese Government and two rebels groups.

“The initiatives contributed to ending the conflict, and the various efforts made by the joint mission have lead toward restoring security, stability and reconciliation in all parts of Darfur,” UNAMID and LAS said in a joint statement.

Mr. Gambari expressed UNAMID’s readiness to provide the appropriate facilities for the Arab League to monitor Sudan’s elections next year in Darfur.

He thanked Egypt for co-chairing the conference and commended the work of the country’s troops serving in Darfur. Egypt is one of the largest contributors of troops to UNAMID, providing over 2,500 military and police personnel.
