Haiti: UN peacekeeping mission condemns shooting of judge

The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) today condemned “in the strongest terms” an armed attack wounding a judge from the small Caribbean country in an attempt to undermine justice.

Maitre Jean Carves, who has recently presided over kidnapping cases, was shot on Thursday, MINUSTAH said in a news release denouncing the attack as “unacceptable interference” with the authority of justice.

“He is not the first magistrate victim of an armed attack,” said Danielle Saada, Chief of the Justice Section of MINUSTAH.

“The crime must be denounced and punished,” added Ms. Saada. “The mission will provide its full support to the National Police so that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice, the same justice they are trying to silence.”

MINUSTAH also expressed its sympathy to Judge Carves and members of his family, while wishing him a speedy and complete recovery.
