UN committed to backing Liberia’s security sector, says top official

Alain Le Roy
The head of United Nations peacekeeping operations today wrapped up the latest leg of his West African tour in Liberia, resolving to continue the world body’s support for the country.

Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Alain Le Roy gave assurances that Liberia’s security agencies and judicial sector can count on the UN for its ongoing assistance in Monrovia’s bid to restore full State authority over the entire country.

Mr. Le Roy also called for transparency in the management of public funding, stressing that the UN “cannot do it all, some [help will] have to come from the national budget – donors want to help those who help themselves” and “corruption deters donors.”

During the visit, he met with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as well as senior officials of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and government representatives to discuss key security issues, including the police, military and reform.

In addition to Liberia, Mr. Le Roy visited Côte d’Ivoire and is slated to head to Mali tomorrow followed by Nigeria, where he will meet with Government officials and local authorities.
