Top UN envoy saddened over death of Sudan’s foremost writer

The Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Sudan today expressed his deep sorrow over the death of the north-east African nation’s most renowned novelist, Al-Tayeb Saleh.

“Mr. Saleh will be always remembered in Sudan and elsewhere around the world as an outstanding writer whose fiction explored various ways of how different cultures, generations and peoples can co-exist peacefully,” according to press statement issued by UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), headed by Ashraf Jehangir Qazi.

On behalf of the mission, the Representative extended his condolences to the writer’s family and offered his sympathy to the Sudanese people and Mr. Saleh’s friends and admirers worldwide.
