Concluding visit to Austria, Annan heads to Asia

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan headed to Asia from Vienna today after wrapping up a three-day visit to the Austrian capital, where he attended the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan headed to Asia from Vienna today after wrapping up a three-day visit to the Austrian capital, where he attended the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean.

During his stay, the Secretary-General also held a series of meetings with senior Austrian officials, the Chancellor, Wolfgang Schüssel, Federal President Heinz Fischer and Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik.

In addition, Mr. Annan held bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit with the Presidents of Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Finland, Chile and Brazil. He met with heads and senior officials of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries and the President of the Inter-American Development Bank.

The Secretary-General is travelling to Seoul in the Republic of Korea today on the first leg of a trip to Asia which will take him also to Japan, China, Viet Nam and Thailand.
