United Nations agencies are working to help Pakistani earthquake survivors suffering after this weekend’s heavy rains and snow exacerbated their already desperate living conditions, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported.

Responding to flooding in some camps, UN agencies are working with relief partners to move families out of damaged tents and into drier accommodations, OCHA said. Officials are also providing high-energy biscuits and dates to families who could not cook because of the inclement weather.

Most of the main roads used by UN and other humanitarian agencies to distribute relief to survivors have been closed or declared unsafe for travel because of the heavy snow, landslides and mudslides. The harsh winter weather also has grounded many helicopter flights.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake, as measured on the Richter Scale, that struck South Asia on 8 October killed more than 73,000 people in Pakistan and 1,300 in India while injuring 70,000 others. Millions were rendered homeless.
