In Liberia, UN mission responds to threat to block voting by internally displaced

Responding to a threat to block ballot boxes coming to an internally displaced persons' camp for the Liberian elections next month, the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) said it would take firm action against anyone who disturbed the peace at any time.

"UNMIL's attention has been drawn to remarks recently made on Star Radio by the chairman of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) living in Wilson Camp, in which he stated that the displaced people will not allow ballot boxes in the camp on polling day," it said in a statement yesterday.

It expressed deep concern about the remarks "and the declared intention to disrupt the elections." An individual could choose whether or not to vote, but the mission would not tolerate actions by anyone to deny other registered voters their opportunity to go to the polls.

"UNMIL has the responsibility to ensure a peaceful environment in which all registered voters can cast their vote on elections day and the Mission will take firm action against any individuals or groups who engage in activities that may disturb the peace before, during and after the elections," it said.
