UN agency rushes food aid to flood-afflicted families in Afghanistan

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is rushing aid to some 1,400 Afghan families affected by flooding that has devastated housing and vital agricultural lands in various parts of the country.

The agency has sent 21 tons of mixed food containing wheat, oil and salt to 380 affected families in northern Balkh province, where 95 houses were completely destroyed.

In Roedoeb district of Samangan province, 25 tons of mixed food are being distributed to 450 families affected by nine days of heavy rain that resulted in devastating floods.

Almost 400 families are affected by floods in Kapisa and Parwan provinces and WFP has already dispatched 12 tons of food assistance to 180 families living in dire condition under tents, lacking drinking water and with poor sanitation, while it has sent 10 tons of food for 171 families in Kunduz province.

In Badakhshan province, 11 districts are cut off from its capital, Faizabad, and 23 WFP food trucks returning there have been stranded after delivering food.
