UN worker, two others killed in Afghan blast

Condemning a suspected suicide bombing which killed a United Nations worker and two others in Afghanistan over the weekend, Secretary-General Kofi Annan has urged measures to combat insecurity in the war-ravaged country.

Mr. Annan's reaction followed an explosion at an Internet café early Saturday evening in the capital Kabul. Among those killed was an international contractor working for the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS). At least six Afghan nationals were injured.

“The Secretary-General is concerned about the increase in violence witnessed in recent weeks,” a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement, calling on the Afghan Government, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force for Afghanistan (ISAF) and the coalition forces to take the necessary measures to address the security situation.
