Ukraine: Annan hails plans for presidential re-vote

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed steps taken by Ukraine's Parliament paving the way for a run-off to the country's contested presidential election.

Mr. Annan's reaction came in a statement issued by his spokesman after legislation was approved establishing a new election commission and allowing for a re-vote of the presidential run-off election to go forward.

"He has also noted important developments under way with regard to constitutional reform," the spokesman said.

Mr. Annan is "gratified that the situation appears to be approaching a peaceful resolution, with full respect for the democratic principles and human rights that will be vital to the consolidation of democracy in Ukraine," the spokesman added.

The polling is scheduled for 26 December.
