UN workshop aims to foster development through grassroots communications

Experts gathered today in Rome at the headquarters of the United Nations food agency to examine how communications at the local level can be used to foster development.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) said the aim was not to transmit messages from the top down, but rather to spread them among all members of a community. For example, grassroots activists can use posters, pamphlets, radio and television programmes to raise awareness and spread information on how to protect against the spread of HIV/AIDS.

"Communication strategies at community level are essential for sustainable development," said FAO expert in communication Jean-Pierre Ilboudo. "Fighting land degradation and desertification, halting deforestation, managing water resources and protecting biodiversity all require the participation of rural communities."
