UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar ends visit

Paulo Sergio Pinheiro
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar wound up a six-day visit to the country today with a call for an amnesty for all political prisoners and the lifting of government-imposed restrictions on political expression, the UN spokesman said today.

During his mission, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro visited political leader and Nobel Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and three members of the NLD's Central Executive Committee, who were under house arrest.

He also interviewed 19 political prisoners in Insein Prison in Yangon.

Mr. Pinheiro registered particular concern for political prisoners detained since 30 May and pressed for their immediate and unconditional release.
