UN humanitarian programmes continue in Liberia

While negotiations for access to remote areas in Liberia are underway, United Nations humanitarian agencies continue to distribute aid where they can outside the capital Monrovia, a UN spokesperson said today.

The spokesperson, Marie Okabe, said in New York that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that after an assessment of malnutrition in a displaced camp near the Côte d'Ivoire border, the World Food Programme (WFP) sent eight tons of food for some 1,800 persons there.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported that it had provided almost 1,000 "school-in-a-box" kits of classroom supplies to 75,000 children in four counties today, Ms. Okabe said. Another 10,000 are scheduled to be delivered to a fifth county, "as soon as security conditions permit," she added.
