Security Council condemns coup d'état in Guinea-Bissau

The United Nations Security Council today joined Secretary-General Kofi Annan in condemning the coup d'état in Guinea-Bissau and called for the speedy restoration of constitutional order in that country.

Council President Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry of the United Kingdom told the press that the 15-nation body had been "following with concern" the events that took place in Guinea-Bissau yesterday.

"They condemn the assumption of power-through non-constitutional means, especially by threat of the use of force," Ambassador Jones Parry said, adding that the Council members called for the speedy restoration of constitutional order and the holding of legislative elections as soon as possible.

He said the members also called on the parties concerned to ensure the safety and security of all in Guinea-Bissau.

"Members of the Security Council welcome the constructive role played by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Community of Portuguese Speaking States (CPLP), the member Governments of which are trying to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis," Ambassador Jones Parry said.
