James LeMoyne appointed as Annan’s Special Adviser on Colombia

James LeMoyne, who has been serving as United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s acting Special Adviser on Colombia since January, was today formally appointed to the post.

Over the course of this year, Mr. LeMoyne has been in contact with the parties in Colombia, and has traveled to various parts of the country in support of peace talks.

The envoy, who has worked in peace processes, complex crises and peace-building for 20 years, has been involved with the situations in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti, the former Yugoslavia, Northern Ireland, Guatemala and Colombia.

Before joining the UN, Mr. LeMoyne was a senior foreign correspondent and foreign policy analyst specializing in conflicts and peace processes in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

A United States citizen, Mr. LeMoyne was born in Germany and raised in Europe, Latin America and the United States. He has degrees from Harvard University, Oxford University and the London School of Economics.
