Western Sahara: Security Council holds 'useful' talks on draft resolution - President

As a prelude to adopting a resolution on the situation in Western Sahara, the United Nations Security Council today held a full round of talks to discuss the positions of Members States as well as the proposed text, the current President of the 15-member body said.

Speaking to reporters after the Council's closed-door discussions, Ambassador Jeremy Greenstock of the United Kingdom said there were several comments by Council members on the draft introduced by the United States on behalf the United Kingdom and France.

Representatives from the sponsors would be meeting with those from the Russian Federation to discuss amendments proposed by that delegation before the Council takes up the matter later this week, Ambassador Greenstock said.

"This was a useful, first full round [of discussions] which will be followed on Friday with a further round, which I hope will produce progress on a resolution," Ambassador Greenstock said. "But there's quite a long way to go because this is a divisive issue."
