UN envoy for war-affected children visits Ingushetia, Russian Federation

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict today visited camps for internally displaced Chechens living in Ingushetia, Russian Federation.

Touring settlements, Olara Otunnu spoke with internally displaced children and families. He also visited health centres, schools and sports facilities, witnessing cultural activities carried out by displaced populations there.

During his visit, which came on the heels of a trip to Moscow where he met with key Russian officials, Mr. Otunnu also observed the humanitarian activities of UN agencies and various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the area.

In addition, the Special Representative met with the President of the Republic of Ingushetia, Murat Zayzikov, and other senior officials.

The Special Representative is in the region to promote the protection, rights and well-being of children affected by war. He aims to assess first hand the situation of children affected by the conflict in Chechnya, while calling attention to their plight.
