As access improves, UN delivers more aid to Jenin refugee camp

For the second day running, United Nations relief workers delivered aid to parts of the Jenin refugee camp on the West Bank, where the UN is gearing up to help feed people, clear explosives and eventually reconstruct shelters.

"Although full access to all parts of the camp is not yet possible, officials from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) were able to distribute milk and bread to some 500 families," UN spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters in New York. He noted that the curfew had been partially lifted in a number of areas throughout the camp.

UNRWA, which found unexploded ordinances in the camp during a preliminary check on Tuesday, is also working with donor countries to try to bring in bomb disposal experts to help clear the area.

"While UNRWA will focus on feeding the people in the camp, on clearing ordinance and, eventually, rebuilding of facilities and shelters, the International Committee for the Red Cross will focus the search and rescue efforts for people who might still be trapped beneath the rubble," Mr. Eckhard said.
