Annan welcomes agreement on Cyprus meeting

Secretary-General Kofi Annan today welcomed a planned meeting in Cyprus next month between the Greek Cypriot leader and the Turkish Cypriot leader.

"The Secretary-General is pleased that the Greek Cypriot leader, His Excellency Mr. Glafcos Clerides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, His Excellency Mr. Rauf Denktash, have now agreed to meet in Cyprus on 4 December 2001," said his spokesman in a written statement. "The Secretary-General hopes this meeting will move the process forward."

The Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, will be present at the meeting, according to the statement.
