Security Council strongly condemns attack on UN helicopter in Georgia

The United Nations Security Council this evening strongly condemned today's attack against a helicopter of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG), which resulted in the death of the nine people on board.

In a statement to the press, Council President Richard Ryan of Ireland said the Council members stressed the importance of a speedy investigation of the responsibilities in the attack. "The perpetrators must be brought to justice," he said.

Members of the Council also recalled that it was the primary responsibility of both sides in the Georgian conflict to provide appropriate security conditions for the work of the Mission at all times, pursuant to relevant Council resolutions and their mutual obligations.
