An explosive device that detonated early this morning in the central Bosnian town of Vitez caused severe damage but no injuries, the United Nations Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNMIBH) said today.

UNMIBH condemned the bombing, which targeted the local branch office of the Social Democratic Party, one of the non-nationalist political parties that currently hold power in Bosnia. Officers of the UN International Police Task Force were at the scene today monitoring the work of local police investigating the attack, the UN Mission said.

Set up in 1995 following the end of fighting in the region, UNMIBH exercises a wide range of functions related to law enforcement activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also coordinates other UN activities in the country relating to humanitarian relief and refugees, demining, human rights, elections and rehabilitation of infrastructure and economic reconstruction.
