The “faint” voices of migrants will be heard much more loudly “in UN circles” thanks to the inclusion of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

That’s the hope and belief of the IOM’s Director-General, William Lacy Swing, speaking shortly after the official ceremony at UN Headquarters in New York, welcoming the agency into the system.

IOM gave help to around 20 million migrants in 2015.

The decision was made by the UN General Assembly in July, and Mr Swing said it was an historic day for “migrants and their families across the globe.”
