Botswana is one of the only three countries that have graduated from the list of least developed countries, known as LDCs, since it was established in 1971.

The Southern African country was removed from the list in 1994,  Cape Verde graduated in 2007  followed by the Maldives in 2011.

Although graduating is a good sign that the country is making progress economically, it can also be a challenge because it loses some of the economic benefits that the LDC’s get.

To find out about the challenges Botswana still faces, Xingpu Yuan spoke to Dorcas Makgato-Malesu, the country’s Minister of Trade and Industry.

The Minister is attending the meeting of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) taking place in Doha, Qatar.
