Security Council and Ban deplore deadly bombings in Moscow’s subway system
Security Council members and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned this morning’s twin suicide bombings in the Moscow subway system that have killed dozens of people and injured scores more.
Media reports say at least 38 people died as a result of the bombings, which occurred at separate metro stations within 40 minutes of each other during the morning rush hour.
“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation,” the 15-member panel said in a press statement read out by Ambassador Emanuel Issoze-Ngondet of Gabon, which holds the Council presidency this month.
Council members also “reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism.”
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban voiced confidence that “the Russian authorities will bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous terrorist attack.”
The Secretary-General “extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and to the Government and people of the Russian Federation. He also wishes the many injured a swift recovery.”
