UN delivers supplies to repair power station in southern Iraqi city of Basrah
According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), the rehabilitation of the Hartha power station is expected to provide more than 40 megawatts of additional generation capacity and enhance the plant's reliability.
Meanwhile, the UNAMI section dealing with water and sanitation, whose lead agency is the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), has distributed some seven million litres of water to more than 70,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Fallujah.
Due to damages in the main water trunk pipe feeding Baghdad, around three million inhabitants suffered from lack or scarcity of water. UNICEF, in coordination with the Baghdad Water Administration, responded to the crisis by distributing approximately 186,000 litres to 11,000 beneficiaries in four residential areas and 92,000 litres to 3 main hospitals in Baghdad.
