Dozens of Rohingya births represent legacy of sexual violence
Introduction:
“A dangerous mix of circumstances” is brewing in the coastal town of Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, where more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees have settled since late August following a violent security crackdown in response to insurgent attacks in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.
With the monsoon season due to start in June, the United Nations and its partners are bracing to secure camps and settlements against potential floods and mudslides.
But they are especially concerned about the well-being of an estimated 40,000 pregnant women in the camps, many of whom allegedly were raped by Myanmar security forces and allied militias.
