West Darfur town declared free of explosive remnants of war

Intro:

Thousands of residents of a town in West Darfur are celebrating their area being declared free of unexploded grenades, bombs and other similar weapons left behind after conflict.

The town, called Kereinek, is the second location in the state served by a project that aims to promote community safety as well as stabilization.

The initiative is the work of the Ordnance Disposal Office at the joint African Union-United Nations hybrid operation in Darfur, UNAMID.

Louis Visagie, an officer in the Ordnance Disposal Office, told Matilda Moyo how they got rid of the explosive remnants of war (ERW), which especially threaten children.
