Statelessness, rising intolerance and hate-speech are some of the key challenges faced by many religious and other vulnerable minorities around the world.

That’s according to Fernand de Varennes, Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, who underlines the importance of recognizing the human rights of communities at risk.

He said he was particularly concerned by the "desperate situation" of the Rohingya; more than 600,000 of whom have fled across the border with Myanmar into Bangladesh, with more arriving each day.

He told Agnes Pastorino, that faster intervention by the international community, including the UN, might have prevented the escalation of the “horrific situation” faced by the Rohingya of Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
