Up to 20 migrants from East Africa are feared dead in a new tragedy off the coast of Yemen after they were forced overboard by traffickers, the UN said on Thursday.

IOM, the UN migration agency, reported that the latest incident happened barely 24 hours after at least 50 Somali and Ethiopian nationals died in similar circumstances, as their boat approached Shabwa, a Yemeni governorate next to the Arabian Sea.

Spokesperson for IOM, Olivia Headon, told Daniel Johnson that people traffickers often dupe their predominantly teenage victims into making the perilous sea crossing by telling them that conditions outside their country are like “heaven”.
