North-east Nigeria’s problems are principally due to long-term “development failures” compounded by a Boko Haram terrorist insurgency that’s provoked a “crisis of global magnitude.”

That’s the view of UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for Nigeria, Edward Kallon, who is also UN Humanitarian Coordinator there.

On Wednesday, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) launched an appeal for an extra US$9.5 million to scale up its activities in the north-east, to deal with an unexpected surge in Nigerian refugees returning from neighbouring countries.

I asked Mr Kallon to outline UNDP’s priorities in Nigeria’s north east, where the Boko Haram extremist insurgency began eight years ago.
