The “cowardly” attack against UN peacekeepers in the Central African Republic (CAR) has been strongly condemned by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative in the country, Parfait Onyanga-Anyanga.

Late on Tuesday it emerged that a total of 4 peacekeepers had been killed, after 3 bodies were discovered of troops who had been previously missing in action, according to MINUSCA, the UN Mission in CAR.

The soldiers left Rafai on Monday night to travel to Bangassous when their convoy was ambushed by armed elements near the village of Yogofongo, 20 kilometres from their destination.

Speaking from the capital Bangui, Mr Onyanga-Anyanga explained to Jérôme Longué that during the so-called “transhumance” season, when livestock is being moved to find suitable grazing grounds, attacks like these are not uncommon.
