Slavery is the last great “unmentionable” that has profoundly shaped every corner of the world although it happened centuries ago, the Director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture has said.

Dr Lonnie Bunch III made the remarks ahead of a UN General Assembly event to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

People are uncomfortable with slavery, he said, and this day allows them to “look at all the dark corners of their past.”

Elizabeth Scaffidi began by asking Dr Bunch about his vision for the museum and how he plans to fight racism and prejudice through his partnership with the UN Remember Slavery Programme.
