Many young fighters belonging to the extremist Boko Haram group can be convinced to return to their communities “with the right approach”.

That’s what Hamsatu Allamin, negotiator and peacemaker from the town of Maiduguru in Nigeria, said when asked about the possibility of reintegrating them.

During the rise of the militant group, and after witnessing the counter-productive strategies employed by the government forces, she decided to engage these men and boys to stop the violence.

Ms Allamin is also behind a network of civil society organizations for peace that launched the “Bring Back Our Girls” campaign following the abduction of nearly 300 school girls in Chibok.

Speaking to Jocelyne Sambira at a UN event on the role of women in countering violent extremism, she began by explaining how radio is helping de-radicalize the youth in her region.
